A century or two later, shortly after Columbus' discoveries in the New World, Queen Isabel added a more European-style wing to the palace. She established this to manage Spain's New World interests, anticipating a large business in pillage and trade. Santa Maria de los Buenos Aires is the chapel's patron saint. St. Mary of the Good Winds was Columbus' favorite saint and the patron saint of navigators. This altar picture originates from shortly after Columbus' death and contains, on the left, what is said to be the first and most accurate portrait of the great explorer.
